Danica McKellar – Then

Before Jimmy Fallon declared her character of Winnie Cooper to be “the coolest girl in any TV show ever,” Danica McKellar was just a kid taking weekend acting classes at the Lee Stratsberg Institute in Los Angeles. She landed her most prominent role on The Wonder Years in 1988, and the show ran until 1993. On the ABC sitcom, McKellar played the friend of Fred Savage. It was exactly as nerve-racking as it sounds!

Judith Light – Then

There is no denying that Judith Light brought feistiness to Who’s the Boss? with the iconic role of Angela. A driven, independent woman, Angela is attracted to housekeeper Tony and vice versa, which becomes a recurring storyline throughout the show’s run. Although they eventually profess their love for each other, producers decided against having the lovebirds tie the knot on the show in order to ensure that viewers didn’t lose interest. Light had previously appeared on shows such as One Life to Live and St. Elsewhere.

By the age of 15, she had already appeared in a remarkable 130 episodes of the Disney show. Most people though will recognize Whelchel for her role as Blair Warner in The Facts of Life, playing the character for nine straight seasons. Blair is a little rebel, who was both vain and shallow but also funny and kind, in equal measures. Whelchel also appeared as Blair in a couple of episodes of Diff’rent Strokes.

As soon as the ’80s were over, Whelchel’s acting career also took a long-running hiatus. This seemed to coincide with her marriage to Steven Cauble, who she had three kids with but ultimately separated from in 2012. Interestingly enough, it was this very same year that Whelchel competed on the hit competitive reality series Survivor: Philippines, where she finished in second place. She also received $100,000 after being voted the fan favorite. These days, Whelchel does a lot of work as a motivational speaker.

Sara Gilbert – Then

Sara Gilbert first burst onto the TV scene through her role as Darlene in the hit series Roseanne. She plays the daughter of Dan and the titular character and developed a reputation for being an unconventional, tomboyish, young female sitcom character. Apparently, producers nearly didn’t cast Gilbert because they thought she wasn’t cute enough. There is no denying that it was the right call though as Gilbert brought a level of gravitas to the role that most child actors probably couldn’t.

Sara Gilbert – Then

Sara Gilbert – Now

Throughout the years, Sara Gilbert has stayed busy in the world of TV, appearing on shows such as 24, ER, and Twins, to name a few. Of course, the talented actress has won a completely new audience through her work as Leslie Winkle in the hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory, reuniting with her Roseanne co-star Johnny Galecki. She also reprised her role as Darlene for the spinoff series of Roseanne, The Conners, which has since received rave reviews.

Sara Gilbert – Now

Rhea Perlman – Then

There is no denying that Rhea Perlman is best known for her memorable role as Carla Tortelli in the iconic ’80s sitcom Cheers. Carla seems to be mean and looks down upon the others around her. But through the 271 episodes that she was a part of, Carla evolves and becomes one of the most beloved characters on the show. Along with the likes of Norm Peterson and Sam Malone, Carla is one of just three characters who was in every single episode.

Rhea Perlman – Then

Rhea Perlman – Now

While her role as Carla is certainly her claim to fame, this hasn’t stopped Rhea Perlman from working elsewhere in the entertainment industry. Since the turn of the century, she has appeared in movies such as Beethoven’s Big Break and The Christmas Choir, to name a few. She also appeared in the West End production Boeing Boeing. Over the years, Perlman has had a complicated relationship with Danny DeVito. Although they are separated, they are still technically married.

Telma Hopkins – Then

There were plenty of unforgettable characters in Family Matters and Rachel Baines Crawford was certainly one of them. The younger sister of Harriette, Rachel is a real go-getter, despite having plenty of pain after the loss of her husband. Hopkins left the show for a year because she was working on the failed sitcom Getting By, but she did come back for future seasons.

Telma Hopkins – Now

Julie Piekarski – Then

Another unforgettable character from The Facts of Life has to be Sue Ann Weaver, who was portrayed by Julie Piekarski. Although it is believed that she has a lower IQ than the other students, Sue Ann still excels at school and one of her key goals in life is to chase the boys. Similar to Lisa Whelchel, Piekarski also spent the early stages of her acting career working on The New Mickey Mouse Club, starring in 130 episodes.

Julie Piekarski – Then

Julie Piekarski – Now

It seems like Julie Piekarski’s acting career all but dried up after her time on The Facts of Life came to an end. In the last 30+ years, it seems like her only serious acting credit came in the 2016 low budget movie The Importance of Doubting Tom. Ultimately, Piekarski traded in her acting career to be an entertainment reporter for KPLR-TV in St. Louis, although this only lasted briefly. She was married to dentist John Probst for over 30 years until 2017.

Julie Piekarski – Now

Sally Struthers – Then

There is no denying that Archie Bunker was the guy that everyone remembers from All in the Family. That isn’t to say though that he was the only great character from that show. Another character that stayed with fans long after the show ended was Gloria Stivic, the daughter of the aforementioned family man and wife Edith. She would often get caught up in arguments between her father and ex-husband. Gloria always seemed to be the voice of reason on that show.

Sally Struthers – Then

Sally Struthers – Now

As the years have passed, Sally Struthers has continued to stay relatively relevant in the world of acting, mainly working in theater. In 2014, she toured in the 50th-anniversary production of Hello, Dolly!, playing the title character. She has worked on a number of charitable causes, including ChildFund. She has also been a spokesperson for International Correspondence Schools. Struthers has also had brief roles on shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and South Park, to name a few.

Sally Struthers – Now

Bebe Neuwirth – Then

It’s funny that Lilith Sternin appears on this list, especially since the character spent most of her time off-screen during the ’90s in the spinoff to CheersFrasier. However, Bebe Neuwirth locked down a respectable 80 episodes in the mother show, playing the uptight psychiatrist who begins a relationship with Kelsey Grammer’s character and even ends up having a son with him. However, their relationship ends after she cheats on him with another man. She ends up sporadically appearing throughout Frasier‘s run.

Bebe Neuwirth – Then

Bebe Neuwirth – Now

Since Cheers came to an end over 25 years ago, Bebe Neuwirth has been maintaining a steady career in the world of acting, appearing in successful shows such as HBO’s Bored to Death, as well as Blue Bloods and Will & Grace. Since 2009, Neuwirth has been married to Chris Calkins and in more recent times, she has dedicated her time to many charitable organizations such as The Actors Fund and Seeds of Peace. She does pottery in her spare time.

Bebe Neuwirth – Now

Kirstie Alley – Then

Before Kirstie Alley took on her best know role of Rebecca Howe in the NBC sitcom Cheers, she played Lieutenant JG Saavic in 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
