Although Indonesia is home to over 150 volcanoes, there are certain craters that really stand out from the crowd - and Mount Bromo is one of them. Due to the extremely fertile soil around the volcano, the surrounding area is luscious and green, but a hike up the peak soon allows you to see a changing environment. In fact, it may seem as though you’ve landed on an alien planet. The hike will take you around 1-2 hours, but it’s best to hike before the sun rises so that you can check out the incredible sunrise from the top.

While Mount Bromo is perfect for a morning hike, Mount Ijen is perfect for a night-time adventure. That’s because this volcano is home to a steaming sulfur lake that’s perfectly blue, and you can even check out the blue flames when the sun starts to set. The lake at the top is well worth the 1-2 hour climb and the fact that it’s best to wear a gas mask.
