South Africa’s Luxurious Blue Train Celebrates Its 70th Anniversary In Style

Journey back into the past when you book a trip on South Africa’s famous Blue Train, who’s been providing luxury train travel on the express trip running from Cape Town to the country’s capital in Pretoria.

The train only makes one stop along the way, in the colonial style town Matjiesfontein that completes the time capsule. Providing guests with the kind of service that is mostly seen in movies these days, the accommodations are small but sumptuous.

Outfitted with high end arm chairs that convert into beds, each compartment is lined with hardwood paneling, while the bathrooms are fitted with Italian marble. The best part of each compartment though, are the crystal clear panoramic windows that allow guests to see the countryside passing by as they travel.

There air of luxury extends to the service guests receive from the moment of their arrival where they are greeted by uniform porters who receive their luggage, before lining up for a formal send off as guests board the train.

Dinners require the type of formal wear most Americans reserve for special occasions, but it only adds to the feeling of stepping back in time. A train ticket for the 30 hour ride will always feature a five course dinner, accompanied by good wine and even better service.

The views of the South African countryside are impressive, as the train reaches the Kalahari desert around the time when guests begin to wake up. They are offered a sumptuous spread for breakfast, once again accompanied by alcohol.

The moving luxury resort offers just about everything for the price of a ticket, including the cigars on offer in the lounge. It is only caviar and champagne that will cost extra. A single ticket will set you back $855, but for the quality of service, it’s worth it for such a special trip.
