Warren Beatty is one of Hollywood’s biggest powerhouses, with an impressive career that already spans well over six decades. But he’s not just an actor – Warren is also a prolific and well respected film producer with 53 Academy Award nominations to his name. However, Warren is as well known for his romantic life as his professional accomplishments.
Madonna – Then
In the 1980s, Warren dated none other than #1 pop princess Madonna!
Madonna – Now
It may seem like an odd pairing – an old Hollywood legend with a modern (at the time) pop princess, but the couple met on the set of the film Dick Tracy and were in a committed relationship for around 15 months. After the couple went their separate ways, Madonna ended up getting married to British director Guy Ritchie, and Warren Beatty married his wife Annette Bening in 1992 – the couple is still together to this day.
Joan Collins – Then
Before Warren Beatty was a legendary Lothario, he fell head over heels for British actress Joan Collins. When Warren was 22 and new to Hollywood, he began a romance with her after they met at a restaurant. In her autobiography, Joan wrote, “Warren actually proposed, presenting me with a large gold ring studded with pearls.” She went on to reveal that, “I knew that our relationship…was doomed. Marriage to Warren would never have lasted because he simply loved the ladies too much.”
Joan Collins – Now
After ending her romance with Warren, Joan Collins went on to be married and divorced three times. She’s had more success in her professional life – she’s well known for her iconic role on Dallas as Alexis Colby, a part which made her a household name and earned her a Golden Globe. She’s been honored with her own Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Queen Elizabeth II named her a Dame in 2015 due to her extensive philanthropic work.
Annette Bening – Then
Despite his notorious shenanigans as Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor, it was love at first sight when Warren first laid eyes on Annette Bening. The two met after he cast her in Bugsy.“I remember losing interest in the garlic chicken I was eating within 20 seconds,” he said in an interview. “And the garlic chicken had been very good.” If that isn’t romantic enough, he also said, “I had no doubt when I met Annette that it was time to get married.”
Annette Bening – Now
The couple has stayed strong over the course of the last quarter century. The two share four children together – Stephen Ira, Benjamin, Isabel, and Ella. In a 2016 interview, when asked if he ever missed his wild days, Warren said clearly, “I became a devoted husband and father 25 years ago, and I have to say they have been the most enthralling years of my life, with our four fantastic kids.” He definitely has no regrets about settling down!
Daryl Hannah – Then
Daryl Hannah was at the peak of the game when she briefly dated Warren Beatty in the early 1980s. Her iconic role as mermaid Madison, starring opposite Tom Hanks, in the smash hit film Splash elevated her from obscurity to household name status recognition. During her early days in Hollywood, she was a scream queen who starred in the horror flicks The Final Terror and The Fury. She met Warren at an industry event in 1986.
Daryl Hannah – Now
Daryl Hannah rose to fame after her brief dalliance with Warren Beatty. She’s a blonde bombshell whose managed to remain relevant decades on, with appearances in contemporary films like the Kill Bill trilogy and A Walk To Remember. But it’s not just show business that has her heart – Daryl is so passionate about her environmental causes that she’s ended up on the wrong side of the law more than once when protests have gotten a little bit too heated.
Melanie Griffith – Then
Melanie Griffith was born Hollywood royalty – her mother, Tippi Hedren, had been Alfred Hitchcock’s muse and she starred in several of his iconic films, including The Birds. Melanie married Miami Vice star Don Johnson at the age of eighteen but the two were divorced just six months later. During the period after her divorce, Melanie had a brief affair with Warren Beatty after the two met at an industry party. They parted ways after only a few weeks.
Melanie Griffith – Now
Although Warren Beatty was quite the heartbreaker, Melanie Griffith doesn’t bear any ill will towards her former boyfriend. In a recent interview when asked about their affair, she casually said, “I did have a little thing with him back in the day. Yeah, he was awesome. I am friends with him, pretty much.” Since ending things with Warren, Melanie got remarried (and divorced for the second time) from Don Johnson, then eventually wed Spanish movie star Antonio Banderas.
Carly Simon – Then
Carly Simon was a popular folk rock queen at the time that movie star and Hollywood golden boy Warren Beatty charmed his way into her life. He introduced himself after one of her concerts. In her autobiography, Carly writes about how she felt for Warren at the time of their romance: “What a glorious specimen of man. He put them all to shame, if looks and charm were what you were after. He homed in like a tracking dog.”
Carly Simon – Now
Carly Simon went on to have a popular singing career, spanning several decades, but ironically, she is probably best known for the song that she wrote about Warren: “You’re So Vain.” The song describes a charming womanizer who thinks that he’s unforgettable. The subject of the song was kept secret by Carly for many years, but she recently revealed in a lone paragraph of her autobiography Boys In Trees that the long term speculation was right!
Diane Keaton – Then
Diane Keaton had an affair with Warren after they met on the set of the 1981 movie Reds. Even three decades later, Diane remembers what she thought of Warren: “The first time I saw Warren was in ‘Splendor in the Grass’ [in 1961.] I mean, come on! He was, I mean, to die for. A Dream. I mean, ‘Bonnie and Clyde?’ Come on. And not only was he beautiful, gorgeous and sexy and captivating and mysterious and a great movie star.”
Diane Keaton – Now
Warren Beatty wasn’t the only leading man that Diane Keaton had a romance with. She also dated Al Pacino! She never married, and said in an interview, “I don’t think that because I’m not married it’s made my life any less. That old maid myth is garbage.” She decided to adopt two children at the age of 50, and says of the experience: “Motherhood has completely changed me. It’s just about the most completely humbling experience that I’ve ever had.”
Iman – Then
Somali born and Kenya-raised supermodel Iman was at her peak in 1977, which is the time she had a romance with Warren Beatty. The two were both living in New York City and met at an industry party. Paparazzi photos of the beautiful couple at Regines Disco quickly circulated. However, the pair split up almost as quickly as they got together. Both were busy with projects and simply didn’t have the time to nurture their budding romance.
Iman – Now
Iman went on to have a super succesful modeling career, and is widely considered a pioneer in the field of ethnic cosmetics. She started her own makeup line with a focus on a wider range of skin tones for foundations than were usually offered by the major makeup companies at the time. But she is perhaps best known after Warren Beatty for her subsequent 25 year marriage to English rock star David Bowie, who she remained with until he passed away.
Janice Dickinson – Then
Janice Dickinson is the self proclaimed “World’s First Supermodel” and given Warren Beatty’s penchant for gorgeous women, it’s no surprise that he had a brief romance with the beauty. Janice described the first time she realized how irresistible Warren was in his suite at the Carlyle Hotel: “He played the piano for me – what a delight – then ordered room service. We ate by candlelight. He hung on my every word and made me feel like the center of the universe.”
Janice Dickinson – Now
Unfortunately, Janice Dickinson is more well known for her offscreen antics and shenanigans than her modeling achievements. She has been married and divorced three times, and has one son and one daughter. She was a judge on America’s Next Top Model and has her own line of affordable costume jewelry and clothing which she sells on Home Shopping Network. She recently became engaged for the fourth time in her life to pharmaceutical executive Dr. Robert Gersten.
Brigitte Bardot – Then
Brigitte Bardot and Warren Beatty were rumored to have had a brief affair while he was in Paris, but Warren kept mum about it. Even two decades after the affair, during a 1998 New York Times interview, Warern kept his lips sealed: “At one late-night meal at the Apple Pan…Beatty sat at the counter and ate a hickory burger and fries. I asked him if he’d had an affair with Brigitte Bardot. He stared, took a bite and never answered.”
Brigitte Bardot – Now
Brigitte Bardot intentionally faded from the spotlight and stopped acting in 1973, instead becoming a prominent animal rights activist. She has said in interviews the reason for her decision was “vanity” – she saw that she was no longer the young blonde bombshell she had once been, and preferred that audiences remember her in her youth rather than watch her publicly aging. She has been married and divorced three times, and has been married to her fourth husband, Bernard d’Ormale, since 1992.
Isabel Adjani – Then
Brigitte Bardot wasn’t the only French actress that Warren Beatty pursued. Apparently, he was quite the Francophile, having a torrid romance with French actress Isabel Adjani. The two met on the set of the 1987 action comedy Ishtar. The movie was a major box office disaster, tanking with both critics and audiences. The film is thought of as the reason that Isabel never crossed over to becoming a Hollywood star, and her romance with Warren didn’t work out either.
Isabel Adjani – Now
But after her failed romance with Isabel Adjani, the French actress wasn’t exactly crying herself to sleep at night. She went on to have a long term romance with British major movie star Daniel Day Lewis, and had a son with him, Gabriel Kane Day Lewis. In 2010, she was honored by the French royal family by being made a Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur for her contributions to French cinema and culture. She lives in Switzerland.
Stephanie Seymour – Then
Supermodel Stephanie Seymour briefly dated Warren Beatty, but after they broke up, got involved with Guns N Roses singer Axl Rose. Axl didn’t like Warren too much, and during a 1995 concert in Paris directed a diatribe at Warren: “A man who likes to play games … a parasite … an old man who likes to live his life vicariously through young people and suck up all their life because he has none of his own … a cheap punk.”
Stephanie Seymour – Now
Stephanie Seymour had a bit of a bumpy ride after ending things with two big celebrities – Warren Beatty and Axl Roses. She married hedge fund investor Peter Brant and had two sons with him. She and her sons have made headlines recently as all of them have been on the wrong side of the law and struggled with substance abuse issues. However, she and her husband have been married for over twenty years and are reportedly very happy together.
Joni Mitchell – Then
Carly Simon wasn’t the only folk rock princess that Warren Beatty wooed in the 1970s. He pursued, and dated, singer Joni Mitchell for a number of years, breaking his previous paramour Carly’s heart. But, despite his well earned reputation as a womanizer, it was actually Joni who ended the romance between her and Warren. Joni says Warren told her she needed therapy – she said: Warren “couldn’t pull me and it pulled him into psychiatry. Because he was used to his pleasure.”
Joni Mitchell – Now
Joni has won multiple Grammy and Juno (the Canadian equivalent) Awards for her extensive contributions to folk music. In 2002, Joni received Canada’s highest civilian honor and was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. Lately, she’s retired from the spotlight, releasing her 17th and final album of original songs in 2007. She no longer tours after decades on the road and international concerts, and says that visual art is her first love. She said, “I’m a painter derailed by circumstance.”
Cher – Then
Cher was a young singer trying to make it big in Hollywood when she met Warren Beatty at a Los Angeles nightclub in 1962. She had a week long romance with him but regrets it. “I did it because my girlfriends were crazy about him and so was my mother…” she told Playboy in a 1988 interview. “What a disappointment! I didn’t feel anything for him. So, for me, I felt there’s no reason for you to do that again.”
Cher – Now
Cher has earned her nickname “The Goddess of Pop” and her longevity remains a testament to her talent. She’s been married and divorced twice, and is the mother to two sons. When asked about her career, which has seen her win an Academy Award and multiple Grammys, she said: “When I think about my life, it was a really good life. It was hard. It was crazy. And it was laced with amazing and treacherous and sad, like everybody’s life.”
Charlotte Lewis – Then
Warren Beatty met Charlotte Lewis in Tunisia on set of the movie Pirates. The British beauty was dating the film’s director, Roman Polanski, and Warren was the star of the movie. In an interview, she described how she began a brief affair with Warren. “Roman didn’t think Warren could do it,” said Charlotte, “but the fact is I charmed Warren, not the other way around, so I don’t feel I was misused. He’s a married man now so I’ll draw a veil over it.”
Charlotte Lewis – Now
After her brief time with Warren, Charlotte went on to star opposite Eddie Murphy in the smash hit The Golden Child and had major roles in films like Men of War, Embrace of the Vampire, and Decoy. She graced the cover of Playboy in 1993 and was Playmate of the month in July. She never had much success in Hollywood, but is a regular staple of stage production in London’s West End on the other side of the pond.
Goldie Hawn – Then
Goldie Hawn and Warren Beatty began dating after they were both cast in the movie $. In an interview with Andy Cohen, Goldie described the first moment she met the famous Lothario. “He was so handsome that I didn’t know if my eyes would burn inside my head if I looked up at him,” Hawn said. Her ex-husband, Bill Hudson, wrote in his autobiography that Goldie admitted to cheating on him with Warren while the two were still married.
Goldie Hawn – Now
Goldie Hawn hasn’t faded from the spotlight. Most recently, she costarred opposite funny lady Amy Schumer in Snatched and has also appeared in The Banger Sisters. She’s the mother of TV actor Oliver Hudson and film actress Kate Hudson. She’s been in a committed relationship with Kurt Russel, who her children consider a father figure, for over three decades. She has her own charitable foundation, called the Hawn Foundation, which focuses on teaching underprivileged children studying strategies for academic success.
Morgan Fairchild – Then
Morgan Fairchild was a young actress playing Faye Dunaway’s stunt double on the set of Bonnie And Clyde when she met leading man Warren Beatty. Unbeknownst to Morgan, Faye and Warren were having a hush hush affair. So Morgan allowed herself to be swept off her feet by Warren. The two had a passionate romance while Warren was still dating Faye (more on that later in this list!) Morgan has said in interviews she doesn’t regret a thing.
Morgan Fairchild – Now
Morgan was married to businessman Jack Calmes from 1967 to 1973, and since her divorce, has been in a long term relationship with Mark Seiler. She’s very active on Twitter, posting a lot about world events. “Some of my followers are surprised,” she said in an interview. “They don’t expect me to be interested in military policy and the issues of war. ‘I never thought I’d be getting my news from Morgan Fairchild!’ is something I get sometimes,” she said.
Elle MacPherson – Then
Elle MacPherson was one of the top supermodels of the 1980s, gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated’s famed Swimsuit edition a record five times, earning her the moniker “The Body.” Elle MacPherson described in a recent interview her life at the time that she met Warren Beatty in New York City: “I went to Studio 54 and I met Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol and Diana Ross, and I hung out in that scene. It was very hedonistic.”
Elle MacPherson – Now
Since her modeling heyday, Elle has transformed from a model into a savvy businesswoman. She was married and divorced from legendary French fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon. After fading from the spotlight, she worked with a nutritionist to develop an anti-aging supplement which she sold, along with exercise equipment and other vitamins, on the Home Shopping Network.l She is married to billionaire Jeffrey Sofer, has two sons and three step children, and splits her time between London and Miami.
Barbara Hershey – Then
In 1976, Barbara Hershey was a young starlet beginning her career freshly out of a relationship with actor David Carradine, and Warren Beatty was already a well known Hollywood legend. The two met in Los Angeles, and Warren passionately pursued Barbara, who originally wasn’t interested in Warren because of his reputation as a womanizer. Warren and Barbara were boyfriend and girlfriend for one year, but Warren’s wandering eye meant that he soon moved on to greener pastures.
Barbara Hershey – Now
Barbara Hershey recently stated in an interview that it’s been difficult for her to remain in the spotlight as she’s aged. “It really is a desert for women my age. I hate saying that publicly because it sounds like you are complaining, but it’s just the facts,” she said. However, Barbara made headlines when she began dating actor Naveen Andrews, who was eleven years her junior at the time they dated, from 1998 to 2009. They have since parted ways.
Faye Dunaway – Then
Faye Dunaway was a young starlet when she began a hush-hush romance with her Bonnie And Clyde costar Warren. The two decided to keep the romance under wraps. “We both knew it would be the end of the relationship onscreen,” she says. “It’s a bad idea. You get very confused. It’s why doctors don’t operate on their families. You don’t want to carry that personal luggage onto the set with you when you’re trying to do a great job.”
Faye Dunaway – Now
Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were reunited at the 89th annual Academy Awards, where they made one of the biggest Oscars mistakes of all time! They were responsible for accidentally announcing the winner of the coveted Best Picture award as La La Land instead of Moonlight. The mistake set social media abuzz, with #envelopegate becoming one of the most popular hashtags of all time. Although the mistake was due to a printing error, the two reportedly felt “guilty” afterwards.
