The Spice Girls Finally Address Reunion Rumors: Who Won’t Be Joining?

Sending The Internet Into a Frenzy

They sent fans into a frenzy earlier this year after posting a photo of all five members back together, but it seems the Spice Girls may have gotten their fans excited over nothing. In February 2018, photos emerged online of Victoria, Emma, Mel C, Mel B, and Geri, all together with their former manager, Simon Fuller. After 18 years apart, it looked like something big was happening. With rumors swirling of a reunion this year, and members of the band confirming ‘new opportunities’ are on the horizon, are the group’s plans for a comeback now on hold?

It Happened Before, Could It Happen Again?

Even the captions alongside the photos suggested that a reunion could be taking place, especially since 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of their musical film, Spice World. Of course, this is not the first time rumors have circulated of some sort of comeback for the band, with the famous girl group delighting their fans when they returned for a brief comeback in 2007 and again for the 2012 London Olympics. As one of the most successful girl groups of all time, fans can only hope for another reunion.

Mel B Reassures Fans

Five months after releasing the photo of all the girls back together, Mel B finally confirmed that there would be a comeback of the Spice Girls. Speaking to the panelist on ITV’s Loose Women in July, the America’s Got Talent judge explained, “For sure we are getting back together.” Mel, also known as Scary Spice, continued, “We’re sisters at the end of the day and what we went through was quite an amazing, brilliant, journey, so we’re together, we’re back together.” But when and where would this reunion take place?

Putting Their Name On The Map

The Spice Girls first got together in 1994 and became household names after their hit 1996 single “Wannabee” reached number 1 in 37 countries. They quickly became global superstars and their debut album, “Spice,” sold more than 31 million copies worldwide, which became the best-selling album by a female group in history. They were known for their “Girl Power,” and, Rolling Stone journalist David Sinclair, stated, “Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh, and Sporty were the most widely recognized group of individuals since John, Paul, George, and Ringo.”

Unplanned Stage Names

Speaking of their stage names, it was not the girls themselves that made them up but rather they were issued in Tops of the Pops magazine. “It was a lazy journalist who couldn’t remember our names!” Mel B explained to Rachael Ray. “She said, ‘That one’s sporty, that one’s posh, and that one’s definitely scary because she’s really loud.’ The names just stuck, and we didn’t mind that!” They certainly did stick, with people around the world often referring to each of the band members by their newly formed stage names.

Just When It Was All Going So Well

Having been such a global phenomenon during the ’90s, it seemed that the Spice Girls were invincible. They were breaking records, selling out tours, and winning fans all over the world. However, in 1998, during their Spiceworld world tour, Halliwell announced her departure from the group, stating her reasons as being “because of differences between us. I’m sure the group will continue to be successful, and I wish them all the best.” The group continued the tour as a four-piece and released their album, “Forever,” in 2000.

Fans Never Give Up

The year 2000 also marked the same year the girl band unofficially went on a hiatus. While they reassured their fans this did not mean the band was splitting up, they did not release any new music or perform for another seven years. Their fans waited in anticipation for their favorite five-piece to make a return, but it seemed all the girls ventured into doing their own thing. Finally, in 2007, the group joined for a press conference to announce plans for their world tour.

Going Their Separate Ways

While they certainly made a strong comeback in 2007, this by no means meant that Spice Girls were returning for good. In fact, the girls did not come together for another three years, until the musical Viva Forever, which was inspired by the Spice Girls music. Rather, the girls had all gone their separate ways and were enjoying their own careers. Most notably, Mel B worked in Australia as a judge on reality TV, Emma Bunton became a radio host, and Victoria launched her own designer brand.

Reluctant To Get Back Together

In fact, whenever there is any mention of a band reunion, it is Victoria who is often considered to be the one that is most reluctant. The mother of four and wife of David Beckham has certainly made a name for herself away from the band. Posh Spice has created a clothing empire and is now found showcasing her designs on the runway rather than singing on stage. Meanwhile, Mel C, who has gone on to sell 20 million records as a solo artist, has also been reluctant for any Spice Girls reunion.

All Or Nothing

Rumors circulated once again in 2014, two years after the Spice Girls performed together at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics. While it was suggested that there would be the possibility of a Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys joint reunion tour, it was also alleged that Victoria Beckham would not be involved. Beckham reportedly gave her blessing for her bandmates to go on without her but, eventually, nothing materialized from such rumors. Perhaps it was all or nothing when it came to band members performing.

Perhaps Fashion Was Always Her Calling

Meanwhile, Victoria Beckham may have been reluctant to get back on stage purely because of the singing aspect of the whole thing. Posh Spice was never considered to be the best singer of the group and was better known for being the best dressed. Moreover, when the girls went their separate ways, Victoria was the only one not to reach the number 1 spot during her solo career. All her fellow bandmates had achieved the credited spot on the Billboard charts, but not Mrs. Beckham.

GEM Up Your Life?

With nothing happening in regards to a five-piece reunion, those in the band who wished for one formed their own group. In 2016, when the girls were celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the release of “Wannabee,” Geri Horner, Emma Bunton, and Mel B shared a YouTube video announcing the three-person group, GEM. With a registered website in the new group’s name, the media were certain that this was the beginning of GEM. However, the hype shortly died down and the website no longer exists.

Mel C Is Anti-Reunion

Around the same time, Mel C penned her own essay to LOVE magazine explaining, “I will be a Spice Girl until I die,” but will not be involved in a reunion. “Truth be told, earlier this year after several face-to-face meetings with the girls I made the difficult decision not to be part of a proposed reunion with Emma, Geri and Melanie.” She continued, “The hardest part for me was letting people down, the girls, the fans, civilization?! Unfortunately, something didn’t feel quite right and I had to follow my gut.”

A Teasing Instagram Post

Therefore, when the recent selfie was posted on Instagram, fans could not believe what they were seeing. With all five members of the band back together, and alongside their former manager who made them famous, it could only be assumed that the girls were making a comeback of some sort. With fans hoping this meant a comeback with a world tour on the horizon, the girls remained tight-lipped as to why they had all gathered together that one afternoon in February.

Wedding Performers?

With the idea of a reunion on everyone’s minds, Mel B caused a further frenzy when she suggested that she and her bandmates had all been invited to the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. At the time, it remained unclear if they would be performing at the wedding of the year, but fans kept their hopes up. After all, the girls had once been pictured with the young Prince and Victoria had been invited to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Fans Left Disappointed Once Again

While many fans were hoping for the best outcome in regards to the Spice Girls performing at the Royal wedding, Mel C was quick to lay the rumors to rest. “I think Mel was just kind of having a bit of a joke,” she told the media. “There are no plans to go to the wedding at the moment.” On the day of the wedding, which was broadcast all around the world, Victoria Beckham was, once again, the only Spice Girl in attendance.

Carrying On Their Brand

Meanwhile, there has been confirmation that the ladies have signed on to one project in particular – an animated superhero film based on the group. It has been reported that all the original Spice Girls will lend their voices for the characters of the animation where they will play their respective roles of Posh, Scary, Sporty, Baby, and Ginger Spice. A source for Variety said that the ladies are “fired up about the idea” and are “thinking big in terms of a franchise on a global scale.”

Giving Truth To The Rumors

Fortunately, this proves to be true, according to Emma Bunton, who spoke to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on This Morning. When probed about reunion plans, the youngest member of the group was quick to shut down plans for a movie but did suggest an animation was in the works. Perhaps this is not what people expected after seeing the Instagram pictures of the girls together, but, after all, it is something. However, as many Spice Girls fans should have now learned, never believe the rumors until you see the real thing. So when can we expect this project to come out?

Mel B Is Certainly Not Shy

While both Emma and Mel B have let slip of some details in regards to a possible reunion, there are further rumors that counteract Mel’s answers. While she told the ladies on Loose Women that they are “for sure getting back together,” the media have since gone on to suggest otherwise. This comes after Mel further went on to state, “There’s one that’s been a bit difficult. But she’s getting roped in.” It was made clear to everyone watching exactly who that “one” is.

Could Things Change?

With tensions between the two band members in the past and Victoria’s reluctance for a reunion in the past, everyone was quick to realize that Mel B was, indeed, talking about Posh Spice. However, Mel was certain that after her initial dismissal of getting back together, she has since changed her mind. It would not come as a surprise considering the hefty paycheck of $40 million that the girls are all rumored to receive should they go ahead with a world tour…

So Close, Yet So Far

The reunion was set to kick off in Wembley on September 27, 2018, after global entertainment company, Live Nation, created one of the biggest tour deals of the year. However, even after “Mel C, who had previously been reluctant, was signed up” the lucrative deal went into chaos when Victoria got cold feet and changed her mind once again. “With things still up in the air, there were a few heated debates between the girls and Victoria,” an insider told The Sun. This begs the question; is Posh back in?

Trying To Make Things Work

With everyone else on board, “Simon was brought in to convince her to take the offer, but now he’s failed they feel he’s used them.” It was believed that Fuller would be the one to persuade Posh Spice to bring back her catsuit onesie and take to the stage with her bandmates. After all, it has been reported that Victoria will dress up as Posh Spice for a photo shoot with British Vogue to mark the 10th anniversary of her fashion label.

Too Late To Be Hopeful

Speaking about British Vogue boss, Edward Enniful’s idea, and Victoria’s band mates, a source said, “This has been the brainchild of Edward, and it’s quite the backtrack from Victoria — and no doubt her ex-bandmates will be very insulted by this. It seems fine for Victoria to celebrate her Spice Girls past when it suits her but not when the other girls are begging her to perform onstage with them for one final time.” With September 27 just around the corner, it seems Victoria has made her final decision.

Gotta Act Fast

Since February 2018, rumors have gone in circles about what exactly was discussed on that day the girls all got together. With all band members suggesting different things to the media just weeks apart from another, it is hard to keep track of what is going to happen. As of now, it seems the $200 million lucrative deal for a world tour is off until Victoria Beckham agrees to be on board. After all, if the tour is meant to start September 27, tickets should have already been sold. So, what’s the next step for the group?

Keeping Our Hopes Up

For now, all we do know is that the girls have not been asked to perform at Glastonbury, there is not going to be another Spice Girls movie, and that “There is definitely something in the pipelines,” according to Emma Bunton. While baby spice suggested that this may include a few shows as opposed to a world tour, the truth behind this was still uncertain, until recently they announced an upcoming tour…

Posh Isn’t Involved?

Although the Spice Girls are all systems go with their 2019 reunion UK tour, there is some bad news that is bound to disappoint even the most casual fans of the girl group. Victoria Beckham, who made a name for herself as the iconic Posh Spice, will not be joining Geri, Mel B, Mel C, and Emma for their highly anticipated reunion. Although the girls were optimistic that Posh would eventually say yes to the potential reunion, she has since settled the speculation, once and for all…

Her Official Statement

Victoria Beckham officially confirmed her lack of involvement in the upcoming reunion on her Instagram account, saying the following: “I won’t be joining my girls on stage again but being in the Spice Girls was a hugely important part of my life and I wish them so much love and fun as they go back on tour next year. I know they will put on an amazing show and the fantastic fans past and present are going to have a wonderful time!”
