It’s the most heavily publicized wedding in recent memory. Former Suits actress Meghan Markle is on the verge of tying the knot with Prince Harry. However, the bride-to-be may not actually have that many family members coming.
Her Dad’s Not Coming?
Meghan Markle has had an incredible amount of family issues in her life and it seems like her past is going to end up haunting her on her big day. Why might her father not be there to walk her down the aisle?
Will They? Won’t They?
The big question on every Royal Family enthusiasts’ lips right now is the following: will Meghan’s family be at her wedding? Unfortunately, though, it seems like there won’t be a clear answer until the big day comes around on May 19th. With so many conflicting stories sprouting all over the internet and the tabloids, every single close relative of Meghan has been rumored to be in or out for a variety of reasons. It’s time to set the record straight.
Why Are They Not Coming?
What exactly could it be that has brought the Markle family to this troubling moment? We are merely days away from one of the biggest weddings in recent memory and we could be facing a situation where nearly none of Meghan Markle’s family show up for her big day? Did her family turn their back on her? Or was it Meghan who turned her back on them and refused to invite them? Maybe it was a combination of the two. We’re about to find out.
Troubled Personal Life
Meghan Markle’s imminent inclusion into the British Royal Family certainly hasn’t come without its fair share of controversy. The former actress, who is on the brink of marrying Prince Harry, only recently finished working on the hit TV series Suits and is recently divorced, breaking up with ex-husband Trevor Engelson a few years ago. However, it appears that Meghan’s troubled personal life goes a lot deeper, which is why many of her relatives might not be in attendance at her second wedding.
One close relative who probably won’t be at the Royal Wedding is Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr. Apparently, he tried to convince Prince Harry to call off the nuptials. “As more time passes to your royal wedding, it became very clear that this is the biggest mistake in royal wedding history,” Tom said in a private letter. “Meghan Markle is obviously not the right woman for you.” He also said that Meghan is a “jaded, shallow, conceited woman that will make a joke of you and the royal family heritage.”
Meghan Isn’t Genuine?
Thomas Jr.’s written warning to Prince certainly wasn’t the first time that he has spoken ill of his half-sister. “She is giving the greatest performance of her life. She is acting phony. I’ve read that Meg wants to be like Diana,” he said in an interview with The Mirror. “Diana was worshipped by everyone in the world. She was loved for the right reasons. That’s what Meg wants, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. She’s not genuine like Diana.”
To say that Meghan Markle’s family is dysfunctional would be the understatement of the century. From the moment that parents Doria Ragland and Thomas Markle met back in the late 70s, it was clear that things were never going to be straightforward in this family. “My dad was a lighting director for a soap opera and my mom was a temp at the studio,” Meghan said. “I like to think he was drawn to her sweet eyes and her Afro, plus their shared love of antiques.”
Despite things never being clearcut between Doria and Thomas, they had a moment of pure joy when they welcomed Meghan into the world on August 4, 1981. Coming from a biracial family, Meghan felt a lot of conflicts growing up and struggled to fit into one particular community. However, her parents were open-minded and helped her feel comfortable in her own skin. Although she had a lot of fond memories growing up, there was one particular memory that would have a huge impact on her life…
At just six years of age, Meghan Markle saw her parents’ relationship fall apart. It was during this time that Doria and Thomas decided to part ways and officially divorce. Ultimately, Meghan chose to live with her mother, who was a yoga instructor and a social worker at the time. Although her parents’ divorce was hard to handle, Meghan is grateful that she has been able to maintain a close relationship with her mother. The duo were recently spotted hanging out at the 2018 Invictus Games.
Dad Inspired Meghan
Although she spent the majority of her time with her mother growing up, Meghan admitted that it was actually her dad who inspired her to get into showbiz. “Every day after school for 10 years, I was on the set of Married … with Children, which is a really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up,” she said. “There were a lot of times my dad would say, ‘Meg, why don’t you go and help with the craft services room over there?”
Like Father, Like Daughter
Thomas Markle had a good reason to try and get Meghan into the acting industry – he too was also in showbiz. The former lighting director worked on shows such as Married with Children and General Hospital. He ended up winning two Emmy awards for his work. According to Meghan’s half-brother, she is still very close to her dad. However, Meghan admitted that Thomas Sr. still hasn’t met her husband-to-be. “He’s talked to my dad a few times, hasn’t been able to meet him just yet,” she said.
Although Meghan Markle has stolen headlines recently for her turbulent relationship with her family, it seems that one of her siblings is even more estranged. Her half-sister, Samantha Grant, is something of a pariah in her family. The 53-year-old was also a model/actress in her own right and recently had a book published called The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister. It is believed that the book hints that Meghan always wanted to become part of a royal family.
Samantha Grant, who now goes by the name Samantha Markle, has been one of the most vocal figures in light of Meghan’s recent publicity. Not only has she referred to her as a “social climber,” but Samantha also believes that Meghan has been neglectful of her family, particularly of their father. It is reported that the half-sisters haven’t spoken in the last ten years. Samantha, who has been living with multiple sclerosis during that time will be working as a TV correspondent on the day of the wedding, and won’t be in attendance.
Not Coming, But We Still Love Her
Another bunch of Meghan Markle’s relatives who won’t be attending her wedding include her nephew Tyler Dooley, half-brother Thomas Markle Jr. and Tyler’s mother, Tracy. Despite their apparent omission from the guest list, Tyler and Tracy recently spoke on Good Morning Britain and only had good things to say about Meghan. “I don’t think we are getting invitations, but that is fine, we are so proud of her,” Tracy said. However, they will be at Windsor during the time of the wedding.
Meghan The Babysitter
It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that nephew Tyler Dooley is a fan of Meghan despite not being invited to the wedding. Apparently, when he was a baby, 9-year-old Meghan would babysit him and attend to his every need. A video of her bonding with her nephew all those years ago was revealed on Good Morning Britain. In the video, Meghan can be seen giving baby Tyler a pacifier. She apparently used to take him to the park.
Praise In Spite Of Tension
Meghan’s relationship with her half-sister may be nonexistent, but Grant has more recently backtracked on her previous criticism of Markle. Despite her harsh words, Grant later told Entertainment Tonight, that Meghan was “just very beautiful and conservative, very real, very giving.” As with her book, it’s more likely that the statement was made in order to keep Grant in the spotlight. The constant backtracking makes one wonder why the sisters are so estranged.
Gap Of The Ages
Markle’s claims that she barely knows Grant are not an exaggeration put forward by the actress. When Meghan was born, Grant was already 17 years old, and soon left the house for college. Meghan has stated that given the age differences between her and her half-siblings, she was essentially raised as an only child. During her early years, she only met Grant occasionally, but she was far from a regular fixture in young Meghan’s life.
The most time Meghan ever spent with her half-sister came when she was already 12 years old. Although Grant wants to present the image of the two being close, this is far from the truth. The most contact they had was after Grant moved in with her father for only two weeks. After that, the two women have been estranged until Meghan came to prominence for her romantic relationship with Prince Harry. Her parents’ relationship with each other is a different animal entirely.
Pulling Their Weight
Meghan’s parents may have gotten divorced when she was hardly more than a baby, but that doesn’t mean they harbored any ill will towards each other. Even though Markle never became close to her older half-siblings, her parents remained on amicable terms, even sharing vacations with each other and their daughter on several occasions while she was young. Still, that hasn’t stopped her father from coming under the same public scrutiny that has followed her half-siblings.
Caught In Public
Several days ago, Meghan’s father appeared in a series of tabloid pictures as he appeared to be preparing for the wedding. He was captured being measured for a suit, looking at photos of his daughter online while sitting in a cafe, and reading a book about Britain while in a park. Soon after the photos were released, it came to light that the shots weren’t actually candid. Rather than helping Thomas Sr.’s image as they were intended to, they inspired outrage.
Buckling From The Pressure
The media storm that ensued after the revelation that Thomas Sr.’s photos were staged put an immense amount of pressure on Meghan’s 73-year-old father. Though the palace has been doing everything it can to keep the paparazzi from following Meghan’s family, they have still found themselves in the spotlight. Just days before the wedding, reports surfaced that Thomas Sr. suffered a heart attack from the stress he was under, leaving it unclear as to whether or not he’ll attend the wedding.
The Palace Has Spoken
In the aftermath of Thomas’s paparazzi fiasco and his subsequent heart attack, Kensington Palace issued a statement about the proceedings. The statement, read by a spokesperson to the press read, “This is a deeply personal moment for Ms. Markle in the days before her wedding. She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr. Markle in this difficult situation.” The palace has not otherwise made any other comments regarding the photos.
As the fall out from the photos continued, several outlets began to report that Markle Sr. would no longer be attending his daughter’s wedding. While the reason given in many of the reports was that he did not want to further embarrass the royal family, it’s not clear if they made any announcement at all with regards to the staged photos. When pressed about whether the official statement was about the heart attack, the palace official only responded, “We are not getting into further details.”
Buzzing In His Ear
As Thomas Sr. continued to suffer at the hands of the media, his daughter Samantha once again revealed her hand, sharing with the public that the photos had actually been her idea. She revealed her influence on her Twitter, writing, “The bad press over my father doing staged photos is my fault. The media was unfairly making him look bad so I suggested he do positive photos for his benefit and the benefit of the royal family.”
What The Bride Wishes
With all of the controversy continuing to swirl around her family, Meghan hasn’t wavered in her desire to have her father walk her down the aisle. A friend of the bride-to-be shared with People, “Meghan loves her dad. Like any father-daughter relationship, there have been ups and downs over the years. But they are in a good place now.” If Thomas Sr. doesn’t attend, there are no doubts, just days before the ceremony over who will actually walk Meghan down the aisle…
A Royal Appointment
Marrying into the royal family comes with milestones that many other unions don’t have. While it’s normal for the parents of the bride and groom to meet beforehand, most parents don’t have to make a royal appointment with the Queen before seeing their daughter tie the knot to the Prince. Both Meghan’s mother and father were scheduled to have a private meeting with the Queen this week, but Markle’s decision to drop out of the wedding has called this meeting into question.
Scoring A Touch Down
As the week of Meghan’s wedding progresses, her family has continued to act out in ways that are definitely less than becoming for the relatives of a soon to be royal. According to Express, Meghan’s nephew Tyler and his mother Tracey landed in London on Tuesday, despite not having invitations to the wedding itself. Rather than attending the event live, the pair were invited to act as correspondents for a British TV show, Good Morning Britain.
The Show Must Go On
Ever since Meghan and Prince Harry released their Monday evening statement requesting privacy, they haven’t yet shared whether or not Meghan’s father is really not going to attend. The Mirror, however, has reported that the announcement has sent the wedding preparations into turmoil, as the palace had been fully preparing for Markle Sr. to attend, including dealing with his accommodations and security detail. As of now, Markle Sr. hasn’t even met his daughter’s husband-to-be.
Standing By Her Side
Prior to Meghan’s dad announcing he would no longer attend the wedding ceremony, it was still unclear exactly what Meghan’s mother, Doria, would be doing. The only thing the press has gleaned is that Doria will be riding with her daughter on the way to the ceremony, but given their close relationship, it’s likely she will have another role to play. If Thomas Markle Sr. doesn’t end up attending, Doria could even end up walking Meghan down the aisle.
Up In The Air
The wedding is continuing to inch closer, and it’s still uncertain if Thomas Markle Sr. will be standing alongside his daughter on the big day. Some reports have been published, claiming that he definitely won’t be joining, while others have intimated that the situation may still change. Markle still seems to be suffering from health problems, despite leaving the hospital in order to fly to London, but as of now, it seems he may not make it after all.
